A minimum of thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
