Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
